Hello painting friends!

Happy New Year!

I regret to announce that the re-opening of the studio following the Christmas Holidays has been postponed. Our wonderful canine companion Gus has sustained a leg injury and is facing surgery and a long recovery.

Gus is a 3-1/2 year old Great Pyrenees Mountain Dog. He's recently become a certified St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog. This means his services will be postponed for a while. No good deeds for a while.

Rather than taking on too much while my husband and I tend to his needs, we've decided to just postpone the workshops for a few months.

I'm sure all you pet owners out there understand this decision.

In the meantime, I have decided to expand my online art supplies section, which means you'll be able to order paints, brushes, packets, books and surfaces at your convenience, 24 hours a day! This is a project that will grow over the months to come. Read all about it further down.

Thanks for your patience.

Happy painting everyone!

Recently, I've been getting a lot of inquiries about my mixed media workshops. At first this came as a surprise, given that my studio originated in tole and decorative painting.

But it pleases me to be able to offer classes in both the fine skills of decorative painting and the total intuitive process of abstract art.

As a decorative painting instructor I teach you to perfect your brush skills. Help you see light and shadow and give you confidence to move on to more challenges to improve your painting skills. For some of you this is your creative journey and you're happy on that path. It fulfills your artistic needs.

For others, decorative painting is just the beginning of your art journey. One that makes you want to know what you can do with your own originality. As an abstract artist myself, it gives me great joy to guide you through your art evolution.

To explore one's own originality can be a little scary. "What if I'm no good?" "Who am I kidding, ME an ARTIST?!" Just know this, we all have a need to create. In my abstract / mixed media classes you learn to let go and to just be in the moment. It's a most liberating experience. Why not give it a try?

A Refresher Course!

Here's something else I've been hearing a lot lately... "I haven't painted in ages! I really want to get back into it."

I'm just putting the finishing touches on a new refresher course... actually even total beginners could learn by using the methods I'll be teaching.

So if you've been thinking of painting again, why not sign up for a refresher course? And if you know someone who'd like to try it, pass this newsletter on to them.

And of course there will be many classes and workshops to choose from. More information coming soon.

Our annual Painting for Charity event to support

Not ONE of those dollars raised could have been possible without all you wonderful painters and crafters, so generously donating your time, love and energy. I am gob-smacked!

Here's what the President of PLEO had to say:

All I can say is a great BIG thank-you to everyone for such a successful fundraiser for the Source.

Cheryl you set out with an objective of $2,000 but we not only met that objective but exceeded it with a grand total of $2,532.00 - 25% over objective. Cheryl I cannot tell you how much this means to PLEO and to the participants of the Source. Your positive energy, your enthusiasm and your talent have made this all happen. Without you this just would not exist.

Not only will the funds allow us to keep the Source going but your commitment means so much more to those living daily with the challenges of mental illness. You just say so loudly that you care. Thank-you!

And a great big thanks to your sidekick who is like the EverReady Bunny. Sylvia thanks from all of us for your amazing commitment - everything from organizing, packaging, delivering and selling. What a salesperson!! Thanks for bringing us all together.

And to the rest of the team - so many thanks. Vera for baking and being at the first Paint-In and for organizing the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario venue and for taking time off work to be able to be at CHEO to help sell the ornaments.

To Andrew for being the brave Source facilitator who joined a group of women on a Sunday afternoon at the Studio. You make a great ornament stringer!! And for attending two of the sales dates to help us sell the ornaments.

To Margaret and Suzi for donating of their time to help us sell ornaments at both CHEO and the Royal Ottawa Hospital. Thank-you for caring enough.

And a big thanks to Andre for helping throughout the entire operation - everything from organizing and delivering ornaments to selling, to keeping track of the funds.

Year one we sold $800, year 2 $1200, and now year 3 $2500. Look out for year 4!!! I just may have to learn to paint!!!

Thanks again to all of you. Cheryl please let me know how we can most effectively thank the artist who donated their work to this project. - Phyllis

...Well Phyllis, I think you summed it up just fine.

Here's all the information.

I'm pretty excited about expanding my online shop.

Over the next few months I will continue to add products that you've asked me about. I'll also feature items that I particularly like myself which I think you might like too.

If you'd like me to order something you just can't seem to get your hands on, just drop me a line and I'll see what I can do for you.

Presently I'm adding my inventory of decorative painting brushes. You can look forward to DecoArt Americana Paints and Mediums, paper products, wood surfaces, stencils, and much more more!

Here, have a peek!

This is a big hit in the studio. My goodness I love to feed my students!!!

This recipe is great for using up left over chicken or turkey.

Serves 4

¼ cup of mayonnaise

2 tbsp olive oil

2 tbsp lemon juice

Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

4 cups of cooked chicken or turkey, cubed

¾ cup diced celery

2 tbsp finely chopped red onion

8 cups torn Romaine

8 cherry tomatoes, quartered

4 tbsp toasted slivered or sliced almonds

In a bowl combine the first 3 ingredients plus the salt and pepper.

In another bowl, mixed together the chicken, celery and onion. Add the mayonnaise mixture, tossing to combine well.

Place 2 cups of salad greens in a deep platter for each person, and spoon the chicken salad on top. Arrange tomato quarters on top and sprinkle with the almonds. Serve immediately.

If you know me, you know I love cooking as much as I love making art.

So I have launched a new website which will become huge over the next few months.

It already boasts some terrific recipes which are ideal for entertaining any time of the year!!

You can now access all my best recipes here. If you want to share your favorite recipe with me, I'll cook it and do a taste test.

If it's as great as you say it is, I'll post it on the site and give you credit!
