RECIPE FROM THE STUDIO
Hello my painting friends! Time to close the studio for a few weeks and enjoy the Holiday Season.
I know you’re all busy and time is in short supply so it's a short newsletter!
I’ll catch up with you in the New Year!
All the best! Take care of yourselves.
WINTER and SPRING 2012 WORKSHOPS
Over the next few weeks I’ll be down in the studio conjuring up the winter and spring projects and schedule.
Some projects are already posted but there is so much more to come.
Here are the projects so far.
By popular demand, I'm also running mini workshops during the week. Perhaps you can take a day off to re-charge your batteries....
The minis run on Tuesdays from 10am to 1pm. And then on Fridays from 1pm to 4pm.
Come for coffee and cookies....
As well, I’m delighted to introduce two new guest instructors -
Wendy Southin - who’ll be leading
new and exciting workshops.
And I'm happy to have Joanne Purdy in the studio. She will introduce you to
painting with oils.
You don't need to know anything at all about painting. Perfect for a beginner or someone who wants to explore a new medium.
If you know someone who really wants to try their hand at oils, this is a great opportunity. All-inclusive.
ANNOUNCING THE WINNER OF OUR
I’d like to thank all of you for referring your friends to me and for mentioning the studio in places like Facebook and Twitter. I appreciate your support tremendously.
After tallying things up, it’s my pleasure to present Myriam Doylend with $50 in cash! Congratulations Myriam and many, many thanks!
Oh, and thanks for always bringing your delicious muffins too!
Gift certificates are available all year long....but they’re really popular at Christmas time.
You can purchase a Gift Certificate here.
I will send the Certificate by e-mail so that you have it in time for Christmas. Just print it out on a nice piece of paper and your shopping is done!

You may or may not be aware that I have another website completely dedicated to Tole and Decorative Painting.

I’d like to invited you to become a friend of YDPR by subscribing to the free newsletter on the website... then go in the archives and check out the free Christmas ornament pattern from last week’s issue!
You don’t want to miss it. Being a friend of YDPR means you get a free monthly newsletter filled with great tips, new product reviews and free stuff from time to time!

How to Store Your Paint Bottles
One of my new students just recently asked how I store my paints. I don't know why but I assumed everyone knew how to store paint bottles. In case you don't or wondered if there was a better way, here's what I do.
Of course, my system may be more than the average hobbyist’s needs but you can adapt my storage system to suit your needs.
I use 8 file cabinet drawers where I store the paints upside down. By storing the bottles upside down the air can’t get at the paints so they won’t dry out.
The paints are kept away from any heat source and out of direct sunlight as well.
To help me identify which colours are which, I write the name on the bottom of the bottles with a permanent marker.
I have separate drawers for Greens, Blues, Reds, Greys, Browns, Yellows, Metallics, and one for various mediums and varnishes.
Do you have a great tip to share? If you do, I'll feature it on the website and mention your name!
RECIPE FROM THE STUDIO
If you’ve painted with me here in the studio, you know I love to feed my students at lunchtime. Some of you made me promise to share this latest recipe and so here it is…
This is a real crowd pleaser and can easily travel to your next potluck dinner. Even the fellows voraciously chow down on this delicious dish - just don’t tell them it’s vegetarian!!!
SOUTHWESTERN BAKED BEANS , Vegetarian
Makes 12 servings
3/4 cup serving serving:
178 cals, trace of fat, 0 cholesterol, 502 mg sodium,
35 g carbs, 8 g fiber, 9 g protein
2 cans (16oz each) red kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (15-1/2oz) Great Northern Beans, rinsed and drained
1 can (15oz) black beans, drained and rinsed
2 cans (14-1/2oz each) diced tomatoes
1 large onion, chopped
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup cider vinegar
2 tbsp honey
2 tsp dried oregano
2 tsp ground cumin
2 tsp dry mustard
1-1/2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp garlic powder
1-4 tsp chili powder (for the studio lunch I only used 1 tsp)
1/2 tsp salt
In a large bowl, combine and stir all ingredients. Transfer to a 3-qt baking dish coated with cooking spray. Cover and bake at 350F for 45 minutes, stir. Bake uncovered for 15-30 minutes longer.
Serve as a side dish with dollop of sour cream and with buttered corn bread.
Use leftovers to create a delicious casserole.
Place leftover beans in a casserole, cube leftover corn bread and spread evenly over the beans. Add shredded cheddar on top and bake uncovered at 350F for 30-40 minutes. Serve with sour cream. Oh yeah!!!!
That’s all for this issue. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones. See you in the studio in the New Year!
